In spring 2013, I developed the ambitious #BULOVAcode contest. This weeklong, social-media-wide puzzle competition tasked players with deciphering an elaborate code for a chance to win tickets to the NYC premiere of White House Down. Based on my original concept and designed based on my sketches, all seven puzzles and snapshots of the interactive Facebook application are collected below. All copy is my own. 7 Puzzles. 7 days. The clock is ticking. Crack the code to win tickets to the star-studded NYC premiere of White House Down, starring Channing Tatum, and a trip for two to the event. And keep your eyes peeled for the Bulova Hack watch featured in the movie, in theaters June 28.
The three bolded letters on the White House Down ticket spell out “HOW”
New words are formed by changing one letter at a time: RATE, SATE, SAVE, GAVE, and finally, “HAVE”
Flag semaphore code for “I”
By rearranging the shapes, the word “TELL” is formed
A completely unique puzzle of my own creation. By process of elimination, the only two outlying letters that cannot form 3+ letter words are “M” and “E” — “ME”
The clock hands are set to 8, 9, 1, and 5. The 8 and 1 must be converted to PM military time, or 20 and 13. In sequence, the numbers are 20-9-13-5, and the corresponding letters of the alphabet spell “TIME”
After the countdown expired in the Facebook app, users could input their solutions.
When the solution is successfully entered, users are presented with a final challenge.
The final challenge involved entering a series of coordinates hidden in the previous images.
The first user to complete the final challenge was named the winner.
